Since 1997, Jürgen Costede began acquiring for his company Deutsche Musikinstrumentenstiftung sound recordings of individual Bach suites with cellist Jan Škrdlík. Each suite was recorded on a different historical instrument and in a different historical place. There was a lengthy process of choosing the locations and the instruments in order that their qualities corresponded to the character of each particular composition. Czech Television participated in the project in the summer of 2001 and in the fall of the same year Deutsche Musikinstrumentenstiftung turned over the recordings to the publishing firm Gnosis Brno in order to produce the album, which we are here in putting forth.
